about

Intakt CD 190 (with book)

A homage to the Greek village of Kommeno where, in 1943, soldiers of the German Wehrmacht massacred the civilian population. "Songs for Kommeno" has been strongly marked by the music of Greece, by the string instruments Yayli Tanbur, Oud and Bass played by Evgenios Voulgaris and Spilios Kastanis, by the clarinet played by Floros Floridis, by the unmistakable voice of Savina Yannatou, as well as by the percussionist and composer Günter Baby Sommer from Dresden.

What I can give is music. This is why I decided to develop a music project which puts the focus on the name of the village KOMMENO and the memory of the suffering of the victims … What I have taken in from my ties with Jazz since its beginnings is that we have to position ourselves in regards the events taking place in our world. Arnold Schoenberg said: "Art is not a matter of ability, it is a matter of necessity."
Günter Baby Sommer
